On Monday, June 13th, 2005 honours distinguished by President of Poland and the Minister of Culture were granted to 8 persons: 2 Silver Crosses of the Contribution for President of Tumult Foundation - Marek Żydowicz and vice-president of Tumult Foundation - Janusz Hetman; and 6 honours "For Contribution to Polish Culture" for: Małgorzata Marcinkowska, Michał Prewysz - Kwinto, Michał Stopowski, Kazimierz Suwała, Agnieszka Swoińska and Adam Zdunek for long-lasting, productive and creative work on organisation of Camerimage Film Festival - 8 years in Torun and 5 years in Lodz.
Distinguishing the Tumult Foundation representatives with such prestigious honours is not only appreciating their contribution to Polish culture, but also a form of the promotion of the culture of our region, as well as a promotion of the Polish culture abroad.
With little support from the official film circles, a small group of Toruń film enthusiasts met in 1993 to act upon their idea. Determined to succeed, they decided to invite two of the most famous cinematographers, Sven Nykvist and Vittorio Storaro. To their delight (and astonishment of Polish film world), these two distinguished artists accepted the invitation to a brand-new festival. No one doubted that the inaugural CAMERIMAGE Festival should focus on the legendary camera virtuoso, Sven Nykvist and his artistic partner, Ingmar Bergman. Although in subsequent years the idea of the Festival attracted attention of many cinematographers, Sven Nykvist has remained its greatest enthusiast and ardent supporter by annually celebrating his birthday during CAMERIMAGE.
From its debut in 1993, the Festival attracted a loyal and ever-growing following. Over 220 cinematographers representing some of the most influential societies from all over the world attended CAMERIMAGE 2001 in Lodz. Over a period of ten years, the organizers succeeded in achieving their stated goals of providing a forum for meetings and discussions about the art of cinematography, and establishing a venue where opinions and aesthetic impressions regarding contemporary filmmaking could be debated. This aspect of the Festival also proved attractive to many directors and actors, who within the past few years also became frequent guests at CAMERIMAGE. Recognizing important aspects of teamwork during the process of filmmaking, directors of photography created honorary awards for directors with special visual sensitivity and for director-cinematographer duos. Outstanding film personalities like David Lynch, Peter Weir, Roland Joffe, Norman Jewison, Jim Jarmusch, John Schlesinger, Carlos Saura, Bernardo Bertolucci, Mike Leigh, Joel Coen and Andrzej Wajda were among the recipients of such honors. In the process, CAMERIMAGE became an exceptional meeting place, where guests and audiences have a chance to see the latest achievements in filmmaking by attending numerous screenings, workshops, seminars and panel discussions.
By creating Student Competition Section in 1997, CAMERIMAGE Festival has assumed a special educational role as well. This section includes student film competition as well as numerous workshops, seminars and group meetings with master cinematographers and directors. In a few short years, this part of the Festival became very popular, attracting almost 1000 students from all corners of the world to the CAMERIMAGE 2003. Foreign students participating in the Festival also benefit from Polish families' hospitality through a specially created and internally administered Homestay Programme, where visiting students are lodged in private housing. This popular feature gives them the opportunity of becoming acquainted with Polish culture and making valuable international contacts.
The Festival also relies on a large amount of volunteers, recruited from local schools and colleges, who are fluent in one or more foreign languages. They assist the CAMERIMAGE team during the Festival and serve as translators, guides and assistants for international guests. Their presence at CAMERIMAGE has contributed to the Festival's unique identity and has been unanimously praised by all our foreign guests.

Usually one third of CAMERIMAGE budget is provided by state institutions, like the Ministry of Culture, the offices of City Council of Lodz and the Marshall of Lodz Voivodeship. TUMULT Foundation, the organizer of CAMERIMAGE, gains new partners and sponsors every year, thereby assuring secure financial foundation for the largest and most prestigious international film festival in Poland.

"I feel very much at home in Poland. I am on friendly terms with CAMERIMAGE Festival team, and that's why I know Lodz so well. [...] I am even thinking of opening a film studio in Lodz, in one of the abandoned factories, but for the time being these are only plans. [...] I would like to have a studio
there because of the people, their professionalism, their dedication to film and because of the atmosphere of the place itself."
David Lynch
"CAMERIMAGE was, is, and will be kind of a dream for each cinematographer of the world. CAMERIMAGE was, is, and will be a very important meeting point for the European Federation of Cinematographers for their annual assembly. CAMERIMAGE was, is, and will undoubtedly be a great forum for exchange of opinions, technology insights, and personal creativity for cinematographers of the world. CAMERIMAGE was, is, and will be a great opportunity for all cinematographers to come to know each other and together continue the journey for a worldwide recognition of their rights as co-authors of film and authors of photography."
