It is our great pleasure to announce that Hype Williams will receive the ToruńCAMERIMAGE Award for Achievements in Music Video. Since the early 1990s, the American director and visual artist has helped shape the look of hip-hop and popular music. For generations of fans, his work has been part of discovering an artist, falling in love with a song and entering a world they had never seen before.

His collaborators include The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams. Across generations and musical styles, Williams has contributed to the way popular music is seen as well as heard. His expressive lighting, bold perspectives and feel for colour gave performers room to become larger than life. In his collaborations with Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes, humour, costume and visual invention became extensions of the music itself. Elsewhere, he found striking images in a gesture, a face or an artist’s presence before the camera. Part of the pleasure of watching his work lies in that range, and in seeing a familiar creative sensibility find a fresh form with each performer.

His achievements have earned him numerous honours, including MTV Video Music Awards and the MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, alongside multiple Grammy nominations. In 2017, VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated his contribution to hip-hop culture. His work also extends to photography, fashion and advertising, interests that meet in “New York to the World” (2025). Featuring Fabolous, Lexa Gates and Jadakiss, the video also served as the campaign film for Kith’s Spring 2025 collection. His recent work also includes “This Is the Way” (2024), which he directed for Five Finger Death Punch featuring DMX.

As a ToruńCAMERIMAGE honouree, Williams joins a distinguished company of artists celebrated by the festival for expanding the possibilities of the music video. Over the years, filmmakers including Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Samuel Bayer, Jonas Åkerlund, Wayne Isham, Julien Temple, Joseph Kahn and Floria Sigismondi have travelled to Poland to receive the festival’s recognition. Their work draws on cinema, performance, photography and other arts, giving the short musical form an extraordinary variety of voices. Williams takes his place among them with images that have travelled around the world and become part of the lives, memories and musical discoveries of countless viewers.

This year, Hype Williams will join us in Toruń to receive the award in person, as ToruńCAMERIMAGE celebrates the imagination that brought so much of our favourite music to life on screen.
